Kenny Wesley Performing August 3, 2010
He sings with the tenderness of a soul crooner, and in the same breath, with incredible agility and freedom. Kenny Wesley is the young new face of contemporary and jazz music. Originally from Jacksonville, North Carolina, Kenny was barely a toddler when he started singing, and by age 9 he had already created his first compositions for voice and piano. His love for music and foreign languages - he speaks three languages fluently - led him to Howard University where he majored in Spanish. By his senior year he had written over twenty songs and had his eyes set on a career in the music industry. In May of 2008, his vision materialized with the release of his debut single, “I'm Sorry" which relates an earnest plea of forgiveness to the listener. “People have so many ulterior motives for forging relationships and friendships. I wanted a song that would convey this concept in a sincere, gentle kind of way.” His love for music and other cultures has taken him around the world where he has performed before presidents, dignitaries, heads of state, and high-profile celebrities. Kenny has opened for Anthony David and has shared the stage with several national recording artists such as Yolanda Adams, Gordon Chambers Mike Phillips, Jimmy Sommers, Vikter Duplaix, Anthony David and Jean Carne. His songs have been featured by a host of worldwide media outlets to include: ABC’s “The View”, WHUR FM, Music Choice, Clear Channel’s Discovery! New, African Rhythms (UBC Radio), 4DaSoul, SoulUnsigned, FunkyPeopleRadio, IAC, Fusions Radio, RadioIO, Candy Randy Radio, StarpointRadio.com, Street Access Radio, BounceRadio.net, Classic Soul 1075.com, WINR Radio, WBRS Radio, WDJR.net, Cross Tracks, kemetradio.com, Mallee Border Radio, WCH Radio, Good Morning Arizona!, the Holiday Magic CD Compilation, last.fm, Itunes, and the All Digital Radio Network. The world has not yet seen all the greatness that will emerge out of Kenny's life. Don't worry though: He hasn't stopped dreaming. In the world of Kenny Wesley, all things are possible. "Kenny's tenor is Hathaway deep, Luther warm and, in terms of color, could only be described as golden. Truly an anointing moment whenever he and a microphone cross paths. " -Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Gordon Chambers

ChinahBlac’s vocals have made contributions to projects of major recording artists like Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews Band, Erykah Badu, Redman, and Black Ice (just to name a few). ChinahBlac is best noted for her work as a background singer and serving as the vocal director for Erykah Badu. | Rona Rawis Performing August 17 From an early age Rona Rawls knew her purpose for living was to sing. She comes from a musical family; her father a professional musician, and mother a prolific writer. They both fostered and nurtured her passion and Rona grew up being exposed to many forms of music. From this spawned a deep yearning to one day be a famous entertainer and she would always tell her parents that one day she was going to "Hollywood"! She taught herself to play piano, and at age 9 wrote her first musical composition. Today, that passion is just as intense as it was before. As well as being a wonderful songstress, Rona is also a producer, writer and vocal arranger. Her melodic voice soothes your soul and takes your mind off your worries. Her music is a collective sound of Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop, and promises to stimulate the soul. Her writing is simplistic in nature but gives profound views on topics of love, politics, nostalgia, and religion. Her vocal arrangements are harmonic and splendid, and are a treat for the listener. In 2005, she launched a production company called 3RProductions and she's currently affiliated with SESAC as a writer and publisher. She currently writes for a label called 3rdSideProductions. In 2009, Rona created a band called The Brown Sugar Project which showcases her brand of Soul, R&B, Jazz and Hip Hop and highlights her original compositions. Check out the website www.thebrownsugarproject.com for more infomation and contacts. Rona has worked locally and abroad with a host of bands, singers, producers and musicians. Her biggest influences include but are not limited to Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Pheobe Snow, and Billy Joel. |

Levi Stephens Performing September 7Discovering Levi Stephens' music is like enjoying a surprisingly great meal at the local cafe you've passed a thousand times before finally deciding to stop in. You thought you knew what you were getting into, but this is something more. It’s refreshing --a pleasant surprise that a new artist in an industry plagued by dying creativity chooses to follow in the tradition of those classic singer-songwriters that came before. His debut album, “This Way” goes far beyond the confines of R&B and seamlessly melds a variety of genres, from soul to rock to gospel to folk while always remaining honest, clever and conversational. Levi’s affinity for singing can be attributed to growing up in the Washington, D.C. area in a home he remembers being filled with music. “My father was a big music head. We grew up listening to all kinds of really good music. Music was bigger than TV.” Like many artists, his musical roots began in church where Levi, like his father, sang and played the piano. Outside of the church, young Levi was exposed to artists like Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers and Donny Hathaway. In addition to those soul legends, The Beatles, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix and Prince all made their mark on Levi's musical style and led him to the guitar which was the final piece needed to create his sound. With each song he writes, Levi’s goal is timelessness. “I feel like that kind of music will always have a place and staying power” he says. His songs explore a variety of relevant subjects while including the elements that always stand the test of time; musicianship, strong lyrics, and shared experiences. This line of thought is even reflected in the cover songs that Levi chooses to perform. |
Avery SunshinePerforming September 13This is Avery Sunshine - She's a singer/songwriter/pianist deeply rooted in Gospel. Born/raised in Chester, PA and resides in Atlanta. She considers both places home with many fans eagerly anticipating her first full length. Similarly in Atlanta she gets the same response/support. An EP came out earlier this year that placed really high on the iTunes R&B/Soul chart. The foundation has been laid and the fans are ready! Avery considers herself a healer through the power of music. First having touched individuals to eventually collective healing. Through her Gospel training, she articulates the complexities in life with a luminous insight. She sings about love, loss, healing and finding oneself all through the midst of it. Tamika Jones Performing September 28BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND... Born and raised in Washington, DC, the singer/songwriter Tamika Jones has finally come into her own. Growing up in poverty, Tamika turned to music as an escape from the harsh realities of drugs and violence that those around her so easily succumbed to.A young and timid Tamika, at the age of 11, was discovered when a classmate heard her singing a song so beautifully and ahead of her age and outed her to her teacher and classmates, who let her know that she could no longer keep her voice hidden. From then on, Miss Jones began singing everywhere she went. Singing in various gospel and jazz choirs in school and around the city and even directing her very own gospel ensemble at School Without Walls High School.Eventually, Tamika caught the attention of Grammy nominated producer and Bad Boy Hit Man Chucky Thompson, also a DC native. Chucky worked with Tamika for several years mentoring her on songwriting, recording and the music business, inviting her to work on projects with acclaimed artists like Faith Evans, Mya, Lil' Kim, Nick Cannon, Tanya Blount, and Grammy winner, songwriter Denise Rich.Surrounded by so many successful artists, Tamika began searching for her own sound and place in the industry. With other musical influences such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Rachelle Farrell, Nina Simone, Sade, Karen Clark Sheard, and Jill Scott, she found that she was most at home with Jazz and Gospel. Also, her love affair with hip hop is what she found connected her to her peers and younger kids who she wanted her positive messages to reach and also gave her that street edge that is intrinsic of a girl surrounded by the ghetto. With one look into the eyes of Tamika Jones, you can see the love and passion she has for music and her people, and in her songs you can hear the pain, struggles and triumph that makes Tamika stand out like a rose emerging from the concrete. Finally, she is ready to walk her own path, as she shares her life, love, and passions in the only way she sees fit, through heartfelt lyrics and most enchanting melodies. Tamika has put in years of work performing around New York City and Washington, DC and her performance vitae includes but is not limited to Bohemian Caverns, Blue Note, Groove, INDULJ, NY Perks, The Creek LIC, Carter Barron Ampitheater, The Sugar Bar, Peachez Café, Busboys & Poets, Café Nema, Twins Jazz, Posh, Duke's City, and Republic Gardens. Performing at every chance and passionately following her obsession with live music, Tamika captured opportunities to perform with the likes of Amel Larrieux, Yahzarah, Black Indian, Marsha Ambrosius, W Ellington Felton, Jaguar Wright, Chris Rob, Bilal, Maya Azucena, Maimouna Youssef, Rashida Jolley, John Forte, Taraji P. Henson, Eric Roberson and Marcus Mitchell. She continues to spread her music through various community events, private engagements, and benefits, and finds herself most comfortable at various festivals and other live music venues where her music is appreciated by true music fans and writers alike. http://mrbriggsmanagement.com/tamika-jones-live.html |
W. Ellington FeltonNext Door's Creative DirectorW. Ellington Felton is the son of jazz pianist Hilton Felton, music is in his veins, Its tempting to describe W. Ellington Felton with slashes: Hes a singer/ poet/ actor/emcee. Crowned the future folk-soul hero by Complex Magazine for his vocals on Prince Pauls Politics of the Business album, Ellington is using every weapon in his arsenal to resuscitate soul music. Hes a real talented brother, a Renaissance cat, who paints, writes, does books. Hes one of those Sammy Davis, Jr. types, but on kind of a millennium style, Prince Paul says of W. Ellington Felton, or Dub Ell, as hes known in his native Washington, DC. Ellington knows that poems often make the best songs. His hip-hop rhapsodies paint vivid images that engage, and sometimes unnerve listeners. There's no element of originality, or surprise, or spontaneity. The only thing I try to consciously do with music...is try to figure out ways to push the buttons. And of course, he writes lots and lots of stories about lovefalling in it, getting over it, and making it work. Rather than the sappy, clich-ridden variety, Ellingtons songs address the complexities of love in real life. On the track Love is Somethin More from his 2002 CD Soul Sonnets he admonishes, Love is somethin more/Than love songs, love poems, and temporary highs. People are taking his music to heart. I get very specific comments in terms of the individual, Ellington says of his fans reactions, which range from you saved my marriage and you helped me get over a divorce.
Having performed on the Lollapalooza tour and at the Apollo Theater as a teenager, Ellington is as comfortable on stage with Mos Def, De La Soul, and Meshell Ndegocello as he was in the smoky, candlelit cafs of his open mic days. He quickly gained a following on Washingtons poetry circuit with his confessional lyrics, quirky pitch, and spontaneous style, also shared the stage with his mentor UK Soul legend Omar. When hes not making music, Ellington commands the spotlight as a classically trained actor. check out his youtube page for music and videos directed by w.ellington http://www.youtube.com/dubell202 |
